Hi there, and welcome to the lounge!

We use the lounge for games, discussion, challenges, Paint-by-Numbers lists, and so on. Members of [community profile] rainbowfic are encouraged to join, since we also post community announcements here. If you need a mod, posting here is probably the fastest way. There will regularly(-ish) be a post for questions and suggestions that can also be used for general discussion.

As you probably know, we lost some legends last week. In honor of Dolly Parton and Tim Curry, a challenge.

Between tomorrow, September 1st, and Thursday, December 31st, finish one (or both) of these colors for twenty novelty beads. Let's make some art.

Dolly White

1) I'm begging of you, please don't take my man.
2) Laughter through crying is my favorite emotion.
3) I know I'm not dumb, and I know I'm not blonde.
4) Working nine to five, what a way to make a living.
5) We both know I'm not what you need.
6) Although we had no money, I was rich as I could be.
7) I grew up poor and ragged, just a simple country girl.
8) Here you come again just when I'd begun to get myself together.
9) It's been a long dark night, and I've been a waitin' for the morning.
10) Liar, liar, the world's on fire.
11) It costs a lot of money to look this cheap.
12) My mistakes are no worse than yours just because I'm a woman.
13) If you hadn't been there, where would I be?
14) If you don't like the road you're walking, start paving another one.
15) You better get to livin'.

Curry Black

1) Ooh, you love my toxic love.
2) It's so comforting to know that there are so many people in this world sicker than I am.
3) You don't get there by playing from the rule book.
4) Can you keep a secret? So can I.
5) The dreams of youth are the regrets of maturity.
6) Even smiling makes my face ache.
7) Never trust a silver platter.
8) In my life I have heard many a bizarre story containing bizarre truth.
9) I'm every nightmare you've ever had!
10) I'm good at my own company.
11) Love is wasted on the young.
12) Even a god finds that sometimes, people just have bad luck.
13) It's failed twelve times in a row, but what are the odds it'll fail again?
14) We must be lonely side by side.
15) And I realize, I'm going home.

Happy Bastille Day, all!

It's July 14th still so let's have a challenge. Sometime in the next two weeks, write and post a story with freedom as a theme. You decide what that means. You'll get graffiti credit for the story and one novelty bead for every 500 words or fraction thereof.

I can't wait to see what you write!

Something random recently reminded me that I was planning to put together some list suggestions, so I finally got around to it.

First, for [personal profile] bookblather, I said I would do up Judaism list with specific holidays/customs/etc. for writing about real-world Judaism and not just a fantasy religion that's inspired by it. This is what I've come up with:

1. Chanukah
2. Purim
3. Sukkot
4. Shabbat
5. Pesach
6. Rosh Hashanah
7. Yom Kippur
8. Tu BiShvat
9. Simchat Torah
10. Bar/Bat Mitzvah
11. Brit Milah
12. Kaddish
13. Sitting Shiva
14. Kippah
15. Tallit
16. Ketubah
17. Challah
18. Latkes
19. Hamantaschen
20. Oneg
21. Kugel
22. Dreidel
23. Kiddush
24. Tashlich
25. Parsha

This is mostly based on my experience as a Reform Jew in the US. Let me know if you see anything glaring missing, or if there's a bad spelling in there or something. I'm not sure if these should be defined in more detail because in a lot of cases the definition might just be "read the Wikipedia page".

I don't know about a color for this one - it could be another type of blue, or white is a traditional color to wear on some holidays, but I don't have more specific ideas than that.

The other list I wanted to do is a list of Smash Mouth lyrics from their first (pre-All Star) album (Fush Yu Mang), which is actually a pretty good punk album, but it gets overlooked a lot because of the insane popularity of All Star and the subsequent memeification that happened after Shrek released. There are some wild lyrics on that album that I think would make great writing prompts:

1. Today you sat up half asleep and stared into this cluttered empty apartment and died - Disconnect the Dots
2. Daddy's always gone and Mommy's on the sauce / Living in a mansion, it's easy to get lost - Nervous in the Alley
3. She says that these punks must go / I think we're gonna get the old heave-ho - Heave-Ho
4. Leave the singing to Sinatra and always keep your big trap shut / Capisce? - Padrino
5. Lying naked in a hail storm in the dark / You're my little tornado and I am your trailer park - Pet Names
6. Their kids were hippie chicks, all hypocrites / Because fashion was smashin' the true meaning of it - Walkin' on the Sun
7. I'm forever yours, temporarily - Beer Goggles
8. Why you doing what you doing? / You should be doing what you want / Who the fuck you think you're fooling? / She's the one, the one you want - Flo
9. Put away the crack before the crack puts you away / You need to be there when your baby's old enough to relate - Walkin' on the Sun
10. I've got a bed, I'd rather sleep on the floor / Screaming in my head, I don't like it anymore - Push

Also not sure about a color for this one, based on the very memorable album cover, maybe something space-related that's pink, purple, or green.

Hello, all!

Thanks for participating in the Art Movement: Arts and Crafts Challenge! If you finished your challenge, post here to claim your novelty beads.

Today also begins Amnesty Week. If you didn't finish your Art Movement goal, or if you didn't complete the TV Tropes Challenge, take this week to finish either one for full novelty bead credit. Post here to collect those beads as well.

Thank you, and keep an eye out for future challenges!

Hi all!

It has been a LONG time since we did the TV Tropes Game, so let's go again!

Leave a comment on the post and I will leave you five random tropes from TV Tropes. Use two in a story and get five novelty beads. Of course, if you feel up to a challenge, you can use more than two. You'll get an extra novelty bead per trope used.

The game will run from today, March 1st, to Wednesday, April 1st. You can get a new set of tropes after you've posted the first story-- there's no limit to the number you can get except your own writing speed. You can also mulligan, but it's more fun if you give it a shot.

If you get a trope that is racist, sexist, ableist, whatever, and don't want to use it, let me know and I will redraw one for you (since a mulligan would be an entirely new draw of five tropes). If a trope would be triggery for you, same thing goes. This should be fun, not painful or hurty, so please don't hesitate to ask!

Mods are not liable for time lost to TV Tropes.

Arts and Crafts

Set yourself a goal that you think you can complete between today, February 1st, and May 1st. This can be a number of colors completed, a certain palette, a number of styles or supplies used, a word count, a combination of these-- anything that you regard as a challenge. Comment on this post with your goal.

On May 1st, one of the mods will put up a post where you can comment reiterating your goal and whether or not you completed it. If you complete your goal, you get twenty Novelty Beads prompts. If you can sell your goal as being related to the Arts and Crafts movement, you'll get five prompts whether you completed it or not.

Goal-setting runs from today, February 1st, to February 15th. The challenge runs from today to May 1st. We will have an Amnesty Week immediately after.

Set your goals in this post, and happy writing!

This is the place for any questions or suggestions you have for [community profile] rainbowfic , [community profile] rainbowlists , and [community profile] rainbowlounge . This includes 'how does this work?', 'does this supply or style count for this?' and 'what are the limits on this?'

There are a good amount of things that have fuzzy limits or definitions and that's okay. You're allowed to use your judgement of how to use a list, supply, style, etc. But I also want to acknowledge that not everyone is comfortable with ambiguity and that some people need more concrete answers. So this is where to get those (and then it'll be added to the appropriate page). But there are no tag/prompt/writing police here

Anyone can answer (please, if you've been here longer, jump in and help). Please take time to check what the different [community profile] rainbowlists pages say because they might have the answer, but don't be afraid to ask something that seems obvious: it may be that I need to clarify a description or q&a. Checking the tags on [community profile] rainbowfic to see how something has been used is also a good way to get answers, or at least precedent.

I'll be using these as a resource to find things that need to be added or improved in the q&as on Rainbowlist

It's October! Let's get spooky!

This October, write a horror story. You'll get one novelty bead for every five hundred words or fraction thereof. If you'd like to add a bonus level of difficulty, comment here with a number from 1 to 25 and I'll give you a horror subgenre to write in. All stories for this challenge will count for both chiaroscuro and graffiti.

Spook it up, writers! Let's see what you got.
