Hi there, and welcome to the lounge!

We use the lounge for games, discussion, challenges, Paint-by-Numbers lists, and so on. Members of [community profile] rainbowfic are encouraged to join, since we also post community announcements here. If you need a mod, posting here is probably the fastest way. There will regularly(-ish) be a post for questions and suggestions that can also be used for general discussion.

Recent mod challenges:
  • Lilth Faire

Any member can post or start a discussion or game!

Some more places associated with RainbowFic are: [community profile] justcreate, with weekly posts to check-in and get encouragement with anything you need to do; the discord for both RainbowFic and JustCreate (let [personal profile] silvercat17 know if the link expires); RainbowFic on tumblr; and our collection on Archive of Our Own.

We also have a Google Drive Folder full of resources. More information here.

Happy May, everyone! Hopefully you have not been too haunted by Justin Timberlake on this fine day.

May and June contain Mother's Day and Father's Day respectively. For these two months, write about parents. Good parents, bad parents, absent parents, parents who are too present- pick your poison and get writing. You'll get one novelty bead per each 500 words or fraction thereof.

Enjoy writing!

There's a new event on [community profile] allbingo , created by yours truly. It's inspired by RainbowFic and features lots and lots of phrases involving colors. There are two public cards up and feel free to ask me to generate you a card. I'll be making banners for anyone who gets a bingo or more. Remember, you aren't limited to fiction on AllBingo!

[community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth  is celebrating Dreamwidth's anniversary!
Come join in for fun, memes, activities, and more ♥

Three Weeks for Dreamwidth runs from April 25th to May 15th in celebration of the site's anniversary, so that calls for a challenge. Anything you post to [community profile] rainbowfic  between April 25th and May 18th (so it ends on a weekend) will earn you two novelty beads and can be counted as graffiti (threeweeks). I've added 'three weeks for dreamwidth' as tag for it as well because there's a feed for the site-wide event.

In addition, here's a special color you can use even if you already have five colors going:

Dreamwidth Red
  1. Friends
  2. Community
  3. Post
  4. Blog
  5. Create
  6. Icons
  7. Circle
  8. Style
  9. Interests
  10. Memories
  11. Tag
  12. Feed
  13. Read
  14. Profile
  15. Comment
  16. Reply
  17. Message
  18. Polls
  19. Flag
  20. Archive

You'll get two novelty beads for every prompt from Dreamwidth Red you use from now until May 18th. You don't have to finish the color before May 18th to get a completion banner for it. Fills can be fiction, non-fiction, art, crafts, videos, icons, blog posts, etc - anything but fanwork (you can use it for fanwork and just not post it to RainbowFic; I'm not in charge of the internet).

That's up to four novelty beads per piece. You'll only receive novelty beads for things that you link to in the comments of this post. Because this is for a Dreamwidth-wide event with an ending date, pieces also count as resin.

Not a member of RainbowFic and not interested in joining? Use the prompt list above for inspiration for the posts you make for Three Weeks for Dreamwidth (or anything else)

(I keep forgetting to do these, so feel free to poke me via DM or on the discord. You can also keep posting to the most recent one.

This is the place for any questions or suggestions you have for [community profile] rainbowfic , [community profile] rainbowlists , and [community profile] rainbowlounge . This includes 'how does this work?', 'does this supply or style count for this?' and 'what are the limits on this?'

There are a good amount of things that have fuzzy limits or definitions and that's okay. You're allowed to use your judgement of how to use a list, supply, style, etc. But I also want to acknowledge that not everyone is comfortable with ambiguity and that some people need more concrete answers. So this is where to get those (and then it'll be added to the appropriate page). But there are no tag/prompt/writing police here

Anyone can answer (please, if you've been here longer, jump in and help). Please take time to check what the different [community profile] rainbowlists pages say because they might have the answer, but don't be afraid to ask something that seems obvious: it may be that I need to clarify a description or q&a. Checking the tags on [community profile] rainbowfic to see how something has been used is also a good way to get answers, or at least precedent.

I'll be using these as a resource to find things that need to be added or improved in the q&as on Rainbowlist

Things of note:
- Proposal: Alternative lists for Emerald and Wizard? - I'm still working on these!
- Prompt list suggestion: Offspring lyrics - a proposed list that could use ideas for names
[personal profile] paradoxcase
I was thinking about future prompt applications and browsing the music lists, and saw some artists there that I remembered fondly from when I was a teenager, and then that made me start thinking that it would be neat if there were an Offspring lyrics list, since they were my favorite band back then and I think they have some lyrics that are pretty relatable or are otherwise just good writing prompts. This list is just from their earlier stuff (Ignition, Smash, Ixnay, and Americana, but mostly Ignition and Smash), since that's the music I mainly listened to. I didn't originally create this with the intent to use it for something in particular, it was originally just a collection of favorite Offspring lyrics, but after I assembled it I came up with some ideas about how to use it after I've finished the Fulcrum, so if this gets approved then I may actually use it at some point in the distant future. This also made me realize how often they rhyme "away" with itself, haha.

I don't really have any ideas for what the color should be. I associate them with yellow or orange, mainly because of album covers, but that's all I've got. Maybe incorporate the name "Ignition" in it somehow? Is there a color that epitomizes 90s punk? I have no idea.

I've linked the songs below.

1. All I know is I gotta get away from me - Gotta Get Away (Smash)
2. When the rain comes I sit home and pray / Make it all numb, I wish it all away / All I really need is just somewhere to hide away - Kick Him When He's Down (Ignition)
3. I got a bad habit / Of blowing away / I got a bad habit / And it ain't goin' away - Bad Habit (Smash) (Minor warning that this has a, uh, very clearly articulated string of profanity in it)
4. The more you suffer / The more it shows you really care / Right? - Self Esteem (Smash)
5. Here alone I'll put up and fight / Beat me all the way, I'll take it all night / Hey don't worry, I'll get along home alright - Kick Him When He's Down (Ignition) again
6. Hey, don't pay no mind / You're under 18, you won't be doing any time - Come Out And Play (Smash)
7. Take it to the jury, but they don't give a damn / Because the one who tells the truth is always the policeman - L.A.P.D. (Ignition) (Warning: This song contains the n-word, used as a slur, in mocking imitation of a racist cop.)
8. So if you don't rate / Just overcompensate / At least you know you can always go on Ricki Lake - Pretty Fly (For A White Guy) (Americana)
9. It's all good and we ain't gonna change now / The world is unaware / So if you want, go on and stare / 'Cause we don't care - Me And My Old Lady (Ixnay on the Hombre)
10. And it feels, and it feels like / Heaven's so far away / And it feels, yeah it feels like / The world has grown cold / Now that you've gone away - Gone Away (Ixnay on the Hombre)
11. Know where I'll be, make this confession / Back in her bed for another goddamn session - Session (Ignition)
12. Chances thrown, nothing's free / Longing for what used to be / Still it's hard, hard to see / Fragile lives, shattered dreams - The Kids Aren't Alright (Americana)
13. We are one, and it won't be news / When we hang ourselves with one collective noose - We Are One (Ignition)
14. Your never-ending spree of death and violence and hate / Is gonna tie your own rope - Come Out And Play (Smash) again
15. Dog eat dog, every day / On our fellow man we prey / Dog eat dog, to get by / Hope you like my genocide - Genocide (Smash)

(Yes, Kick Him When He's Down and Come Out And Play are good enough to get two prompts each.)

Undecided if we should remove Ricki Lake from prompt 8, since that show hasn't aired for over 20 years and I'm not sure if people still know what it is.

Hello, everyone!

I don't know about you, but I'm feeling rather nostalgic this March. Thinking of simpler times and happier days and sillier stories. So this March, write some songfics. That's it, that's the challenge.

Stories written for this challenge earn the graffiti credit. If you end up going super old school and adding the lyrics into the story, I'd call that interactive art as well. Earn one novelty bead for each 500 words or fraction thereof.

Questions? Ask 'em here!

What with JK Rowling going mask-off TERF (among many other failings), I'm pretty uncomfortable having lists for Harry Potter.  We have two: Wizard and Emerald.

On the other hand, I don't want to erase lists that previous members contributed

I'd already used my moderator privilege to remove Emerald from the Palette it was in (iirc, it was Jewelry Box and I replaced it with another gemstone). But I'd like to go a step further and either replace the list or offer a second list that people can use instead (I was thinking Wizard of Oz - Baum was not a great person either, but he's dead and not currently trying to make the world worse)

I did something similar with Rich Black to reflect Pluto being recategorized as a dwarf planet, but this would go further.

Opinions? Suggestions for replacements for Wizard? (I was thinking Diane Duane's Wizard series...)

Did you know that January is named after the Roman god Janus? He had two faces, one looking forward and one looking back, and was the god of, among other things, beginnings and endings. Let's honor Janus this month by writing canvases and frames.

For every canvas and frame you post in January, earn 1 novelty bead per 500 words or fraction thereof.

Hi all!

For December, let's have an eraser challenge. Write an AU of your story. Set it in space, or change one little decision. Maybe your protagonist breaks up with their soulmate, or your villain wins. Previously established AUs do count, but new ones are more fun. Earn 1 novelty bead per 500 words or fraction thereof.

I can't wait to see what AUs arise!

ETA: Deadline for this challenge is 11:59 on New Year's Eve in whatever your time zone is.

Hello, I recently joined up and am really excited to start! My story has some Jewish themes, so I thought it would be neat if there was a Jewish-spirituality-themed prompt list to remind me to integrate some additional themes as well. I've tried to keep this to a short 10-item list mainly dealing with concepts from ethics and interpersonal relationships, rather than including specific rites like brit or bar/bat mitzvah, or specific holidays or texts, so that it can be more relevant to a fictional religion, or even a non-religious story. I've added English translations, and I believe many of these have Wikipedia articles that could be linked, as well.

Color: Techelet (a shade of blue, I have no opinion on exactly what it should look like)

Prompts:

1. Chesed (loving kindness)
2. Tzedakah (obligation to charity)
3. Teshuvah (repentence)
4. Tashlich (casting off sins)
5. Tikkun Olam (repairing the world)
6. Olam Haba'a (the world to come)
7. Mitzvah (commandment)
8. Gemilut Chasadim (acts of loving kindness)
9. Shalom (peace)
10. Mechilah (forgiveness)

Chesed and Gemilut Chasadim seem kind of similar in the English translation, but I think usually Chesed is God's love for humanity and Gemilut Chasadim means humans doing kind and loving things for each other.

Anyway, please let me know if you think there's something glaringly obvious missing from the list or if you have a better translation or romanization for something.

I've finally finished making plain text versions of all the color lists. My next step is to add each of them in a text box on each post, but for now, they can be found in the Google Docs repository. (there is apparently a way to hide things from screenreaders but not from sighted people, so I'll be doing that so people don't have to listen to the same list twice)

The text box will look something like this:

Hello, everyone, and welcome to our October Challenge!

My brother, whose birthday is in October, told me recently that it annoyed him that October is entirely about spooky things. And I thought, you know what, that's right, there's lots of other things going on in October! So in honor of my brother, this year we will be doing Pasteltober.

Choose from one of the many October challenge prompt lists- I've linked to a selection below, but feel free to use any that you find useful. You do not have to use the prompts in order, nor do you have to post them on the relevant days. For every story you write using a prompt off your list, you'll receive one novelty bead per 500 words or fraction thereof, PLUS one novelty bead per number of prompts you've used so far. So, for example, if you've written one story, you'll receive one extra bead. If you've written two stories, you'll get two, and so on. All stories for this challenge may also use graffiti and pastel prompts.

You do not need to use only one list, but extra novelty beads will only accrue per list. Please specify which list you're using in each story so the novelty bead mod does not lose her mind. Again.

You do not need to finish the lists, but let's see how far we can collectively get! Ask any questions here, and happy October!

Sample Lists:

1) Flufftober

2) Unofficial Kinktober (as the official account does not appear to have made a list)

3) Whumptober

4) Creeptober

5) Fictober

6) Angstober

As mentioned before, I've been doing some tweaking.
  • Accomplishments is now called Masterpieces. I'm pretty sure I've updated it everywhere and when linked in a sidebar it says "masterpieces (challenges)".
  • Several of the Masterpieces were updated
  • the header image for Masterpieces has been updated
  • there were a few images on Supplies that kept not showing up because they were still on ibb images. So Fingerpainting and Interactive Art's images have been updated.
  • there was a question about Embroidery so I've added some q&as for it
  • the generic banner for 10 threads has been added
  • I added a second site for Chalk since Wired has a limited number of free articles
  • the Rules, Supplies, Styles, and Palettes have been proofread and where necessary edited.
  • The rules were added to the RainbowLists sidebar
  • A few more q&a were added to Styles
  • The new auto tracking sheet post is linked to on Masterpieces

Finch's sheet was obviously better than my completely manual sheet, but couldn't count everything. I've made one that counts 99% of everything! (percentage not guaranteed).

It's in Google Sheets. It should work in Excel. I know it works in LibreOffice because that's where I made it. It works by counting up the tags you used on RainbowFic. (This means your tags will have to be accurate, or you can modify them in the sheet.)

You can find it here. It has my information in it currently. Make a copy (File>Make a copy) or download it to fill it out.

Accomplishments is the only page that isn't art themed and imo, the name is easy to confuse with the goals/challenges. I propose that we rename Accomplishments to Masterworks, Masterpieces, or Showpieces.

Additionally, does anyone have any objections to me modifying some of the accomplishments to better match the theme of it, add supplies and styles that are less used, and maybe add more colors or palettes to them?
