Spring RP: The Hennessy Home

The house sits on a bluff above the sea, with a winding path down to a sandy beach leading away from the yard. It is three stories high, stucco and terracotta, and would look forbiddingly expensive were it not for the worn tire swing hanging from a tree and the flip-flops left strewn around the outdoor pool.

Inside, the house looks much the same--expensive but lived-in. A grand piano, clearly used, dominates one room. Another room has couches and chairs neatly arranged like a museum, with beat-up books and magazines filling its shelves and cupboards. It is light and airy, with huge windows, a well-stocked kitchen, and first-rate entertainment systems.

The first and second floors seem to be generalized living spaces, with the bedrooms on the third floor. The master bedroom is the only exception, and the only one that still seems in use. Multiple other rooms, especially on the third floor, look dusty and unused.

"That is so totally awesome," Ivy gasped. "If you do find a baby dragon then you totally have to raise it and love it and then bring it to me so I can see it, because dragons are so cool."

Isshiri nodded eagerly. "They are. And I will, I promise. What about you? Do you have any dragons near you? Or anything else cool like that?" She didn't come from the desert, but who knew what secrets the rest of the world held?

"You better," Ivy said, giving him her best glare. "Because I'll find you if you don't. We don't have any cool dragons or anything at home. Just stupid pigeons."

"I will, I promise," he said. "Pigeons are birds, right?" He remembered reading about them in one of the books Mamma had given him, about the cities outside Glass.

"Yeah, they're dumb birds," Ivy said. "They sit in the street and eat breadcrumbs and sometimes they're too fat to fly so cats eat them. They deserve it."

"When I bring my dragon to visit you, she'll probably eat pigeons, too," Isshiri offered. "Except if they're too fat to fly she won't have as much fun chasing them..."

"That's okay," Ivy said. "There's a whole bunch of ones that can fly. Can dragons fly? She'd have fun then." She turned around and looked out at the ocean. "Maybe she could go fishing! Fly down and catch fish!"

"Dragons fly, yep," Isshiri said. "Or they're s'posed to, and I'm pretty good at making 'em out of my fire, and mine always fly. And there's not much fish in the desert, so she'll have lots of fun fishing if there's water like this where you live. What does fish taste like?"

Ivy blinked, and thought about it, and then said, "It tastes like... kinda like really salty chicken? Do you have chicken? I don't know, it's kinda hard to describe. You can make dragons out of fire?"

"Not chickens, exactly, 'cause they don't live in the desert, but other birds like them, so I think I get it. And I can totally make a dragon!" It wasn't easy, and his dragons never lasted for long, but he could do it. He held out his hands, called a flame, and concentrated on shaping it, building a face and wings and legs. On a good day, he could even make it move a little.

Ivy watched with enormous eyes, and said, "That. Is. So. Cool! How do you do that?"

Isshiri let the dragon fade and grinned at her. "I practiced a lot. I dunno if most fire-mages can do that kind of stuff, but I don't think a lot of us try? Ri does sometimes, and 'Lani, but I've never seen Mamma or anyone else make fire animals."

"What's a fire mage?" Ivy asked. Well, she wasn't dumb, she figured it had something to do with magic, but magic was just science that nobody understood yet, so. Maybe fire mages did some special kind of magic! Maybe she could learn it! That would be awesome.

He blinked. "Mages...with the fire thread?" he said, confused by the question and not at all sure how else to explain it. "Like, instead of air-mages, or earth-mages, or...people who can create and shape fire?"

Ivy frowned. "Create fire like... do you use a match?" Which was a stupid question because she'd seem him and he hadn't used a match, but there were no stupid questions in science and anyway maybe he would explain if he thought she was dumb.

"A match...?" Isshiri shook his head. "No, I just...pull the sparks? And I make 'em bigger and put 'em where I want 'em to go, and...I dunno, it's hard to explain..."

"That's really cool," Ivy declared. "And someday when I'm a big grownup scientist I'm gonna figure out how you do it, because that would be cool too. Don't you think?"

Isshiri tilted his head, then shrugged. "I dunno how I do it, I just got born like I could, 'cause my mamma and her whole family are all fire-thread. Daddy isn't a mage, though." It would be kinda neat to find out if you could tell which a baby whose parents had different threads would be before they started throwing off sparks, though.

"Well, yeah," Ivy said. "You're not a grownup yet. Grownups don't tell kids how we do things until we're grownups too, but sometimes you can find out on your own. Like, do you know how food becomes poop? I do!"

He shook his head. "Nuh-uh, I don't. How does it work?" It was probably really, really, really gross. Which meant he could tell 'Lani or Ri next time they had a fight to get back at them. Which didn't happen often, 'specially since Ulore, but they were still bossy a lot of the time.

"You chew it," Ivy said, enthusiastically, "and then you swallow it, and it goes into your stomach. And your stomach has these acids, right, that breaks the food down? And it gets some of the nutrients. Then it goes into your small intestine, which gets the rest of the nutrients, and then into your large intestine, which takes all the water out, and that makes poop! And that's why we don't eat poop, because we have really good digestive systems, but bunnies and horses and stuff don't have such good systems so they eat their poop 'cause there's still like, bits of food in there that they can eat. Isn't that cool?"

"That is awesome!" Isshiri agreed brightly. "I'm totally gonna tell my sister all of that next time she tries to boss me around. Do you have sisters?"

"Nope," Ivy said. "No sisters. I have a brother though, and he's older, and he always acts like he knows better 'n me." She rolled her eyes. "I mean, he does sometimes but that doesn't mean he has to act like it all the time."

Isshiri nodded emphatically. "'Lani's like that, too. 'Cause she's twelve and my big sister and all that. Our cousin Ri does it sometimes, too, but not as much."

"Oh, Aaron's thirteen!" Ivy said, brightly. "Does your sister want a boyfriend? Do you think she'd like Aaron?"
