Spring RP: The Hennessy Home

The house sits on a bluff above the sea, with a winding path down to a sandy beach leading away from the yard. It is three stories high, stucco and terracotta, and would look forbiddingly expensive were it not for the worn tire swing hanging from a tree and the flip-flops left strewn around the outdoor pool.

Inside, the house looks much the same--expensive but lived-in. A grand piano, clearly used, dominates one room. Another room has couches and chairs neatly arranged like a museum, with beat-up books and magazines filling its shelves and cupboards. It is light and airy, with huge windows, a well-stocked kitchen, and first-rate entertainment systems.

The first and second floors seem to be generalized living spaces, with the bedrooms on the third floor. The master bedroom is the only exception, and the only one that still seems in use. Multiple other rooms, especially on the third floor, look dusty and unused.

"That's really cool," Ivy declared. "And someday when I'm a big grownup scientist I'm gonna figure out how you do it, because that would be cool too. Don't you think?"

Isshiri tilted his head, then shrugged. "I dunno how I do it, I just got born like I could, 'cause my mamma and her whole family are all fire-thread. Daddy isn't a mage, though." It would be kinda neat to find out if you could tell which a baby whose parents had different threads would be before they started throwing off sparks, though.

"Well, yeah," Ivy said. "You're not a grownup yet. Grownups don't tell kids how we do things until we're grownups too, but sometimes you can find out on your own. Like, do you know how food becomes poop? I do!"

He shook his head. "Nuh-uh, I don't. How does it work?" It was probably really, really, really gross. Which meant he could tell 'Lani or Ri next time they had a fight to get back at them. Which didn't happen often, 'specially since Ulore, but they were still bossy a lot of the time.

"You chew it," Ivy said, enthusiastically, "and then you swallow it, and it goes into your stomach. And your stomach has these acids, right, that breaks the food down? And it gets some of the nutrients. Then it goes into your small intestine, which gets the rest of the nutrients, and then into your large intestine, which takes all the water out, and that makes poop! And that's why we don't eat poop, because we have really good digestive systems, but bunnies and horses and stuff don't have such good systems so they eat their poop 'cause there's still like, bits of food in there that they can eat. Isn't that cool?"

"That is awesome!" Isshiri agreed brightly. "I'm totally gonna tell my sister all of that next time she tries to boss me around. Do you have sisters?"

"Nope," Ivy said. "No sisters. I have a brother though, and he's older, and he always acts like he knows better 'n me." She rolled her eyes. "I mean, he does sometimes but that doesn't mean he has to act like it all the time."

Isshiri nodded emphatically. "'Lani's like that, too. 'Cause she's twelve and my big sister and all that. Our cousin Ri does it sometimes, too, but not as much."

"Oh, Aaron's thirteen!" Ivy said, brightly. "Does your sister want a boyfriend? Do you think she'd like Aaron?"

"Um, well, she makes eyes at the guards all the time?" Isshiri said. "So she probably does want someone. And she likes just about everyone, so she'd prob'ly like Aaron. What's he like?"

"He's really nice," Ivy said. "And he's funny and he likes to read and he hangs around with his friends a lot." She wrinkled her nose for a second, then added, "I mean, all his friends. They're not all boys. Some of them are girls. He likes people, is what I mean, and they like him. And also he's way laid back."

"I think 'Lani would like him," Isshiri said. "And he'd prob'ly be a good friend for her, 'cause she likes to be around people who like to be around people and she can be kinda Dramatic sometimes. So someone who's super laid-back would prob'ly be really good. And once she makes friends she'll make sure they're okay forever."

Ivy beamed. "Great! So your sister and my brother should be boyfriend and girlfriend." She nodded once, decisively, then said, "Do you wanna go wade?"

Isshiri grinned back at her. "I'll bring 'Lani when I find my dragon and bring her to meet you," he promised. "And yeah, let's go wade." He waited for her to lead the way--easier for him to pick his way across the sand if no one was watching him.


((OOC: I love how these two have managed to make plans to a) unleash a dragon on the pigeon population of New York, b) figure out how the genetics of magic work, and c) matchmake for their older siblings XD))

Ivy, used to leading the way for other kids, trotted across the sand without looking back. She flopped down on the last bit of dry sand before the ocean, and took her shoes and socks off. "Are you coming?" she asked, without looking back.

"Yep!" he said, picking his way across the sand and sitting down next to her to take off his own shoes, making sure Ivy was on the side with his real leg. He knew she'd see the pretend one anyway, but it still felt better like that.

"Have you ever been wading before?" Ivy asked, stuffing her socks in her shoes. "'Cause sometimes there's seaweed and it wraps around your legs."

Isshiri shook his head. "Nuh-uh. I live in a desert. I play in fountains with my little sister sometimes? But those don't usually have seaweed in 'em..."

"Yeah, probably not." Ivy stood up. "So, rules, watch the water and be careful you don't get hit by a wave. If something touches your legs it's probably seaweed, so don't jump and scream."

"I wouldn't scream!" Isshiri protested. "...I'd prob'ly try'n pick it up and see what it is..."

"Good," Ivy said. "My friend Emma screams when things wrap around her legs and she doesn't know what they are. Then she jumps and falls and gets all wet, and that's kinda stupid, right?"

He wrinkled his nose. "Really stupid," he agreed. "Getting wet all over when you're not planning on it sucks."

"Exactly," Ivy said. "So don't jump and scream. Also I don't think there are any sharks here."

"I won't," he promised. "What's a shark? Something that's got lots of teeth, or something teeny and stingy and poison?"

"Teeth," Ivy replied. "Lots of teeth. They shed teeth actually! They have lots of rows and sometimes the teeth fall out and another one comes forward to replace it. Isn't that neat?"
