Spring RP: The Hennessy Home

The house sits on a bluff above the sea, with a winding path down to a sandy beach leading away from the yard. It is three stories high, stucco and terracotta, and would look forbiddingly expensive were it not for the worn tire swing hanging from a tree and the flip-flops left strewn around the outdoor pool.

Inside, the house looks much the same--expensive but lived-in. A grand piano, clearly used, dominates one room. Another room has couches and chairs neatly arranged like a museum, with beat-up books and magazines filling its shelves and cupboards. It is light and airy, with huge windows, a well-stocked kitchen, and first-rate entertainment systems.

The first and second floors seem to be generalized living spaces, with the bedrooms on the third floor. The master bedroom is the only exception, and the only one that still seems in use. Multiple other rooms, especially on the third floor, look dusty and unused.

Miranda had had a really horrible day. Just... unspeakable. Thank God her apartment contained plenty of wine (and wine ice cream), as well as far more comfortable clothes and plenty of true-crime dramas to watch. She sighed, rubbing the back of her neck as she unlocked her apartment door. Soon she could just--

Except her apartment door led into her parents' house.

She cursed fluently in Spanish, then kicked off her heels irritably and flopped down on one of the couches. This bloody portal thing again, for God's sake. Of course it would be today.

Charlotte had rather been looking forward to going out tonight, but evidently that wasn't going to happen. Alicia was sick, and she had really rather not leave her soulmate and best friend to suffer alone. Besides, what would be the point without Alicia? Charlotte was very happy with Daniel, and even though she could if she wanted find another boyfriend, she really didn't have any desire to. Much better to hole up with Alicia in their most comfortable clothes and watch terrible movies.

Or so they would have done had she not taken a wrong turn into... her parents' house?

Well. This was going to be interesting.

Jack was really starting to think the universe had it out for him.

For real though, first on his way to a meeting and then when he had something better to do and now literally on his way into the shower? He'd known that any door could lead to one of these damn portals, but he hadn't expected his shower door to do the same.

Good thing it was home, apparently. He bounded up the stairs and collected a towel (because, you never knew, there might be small children or people who just didn't like naked men) before bounding back downstairs to see who was around.

Well. It had been a long time since /that/ happened.

Back in Asil 9, the hallway in the manor had been known to act strangely, which was to say deposit Henri or any one of his courtiers in places besides the expected; sometimes space stations and sometimes fantastical bars and sometimes the homes of other people in other times who may or may not have been surprised to see a bunch of well-dressed courtiers come moseying through their sitting rooms.

The beach house was a new one as far as Henri knew at the moment. Nevermind that his villa had not contained any portals or rips in spacetime as far as he knew before that moment, but he would have remembered anything near a beach. And well, he did, but that had been more of a palace and had a staff of talking snails. At the moment, he didn't even see one regular snail.

Henri shakily combed his hair back so the breeze wouldn't tangle it into his face. It took him two tries, but he did get it fastened.

He had expected he would live out his days without seeing the seashore again. If he had meant to attend meetings in town that afternoon, well, someone would excuse him. He would not let this chance pass him by sans enjoyment.

Perhaps there was a beach chair he could, ahem, borrow? But, creaking knees be damned, he resolved to at least have one little stroll along the surf.

"Pip, do you... damn it."

Siebenkas sighed. No, he wasn't particularly surprised the hallway had decided to be it's traitorous self that morning, but couldn't it at least have sent him along his way with both shoes?

Then again.

He gave his loafer a look. The same went for the shimmering blue ocean. And the naked gentleman passing by the upstairs window when he turned to make sure there were no kaiju or Nenes bearing monster movies behind him.

Yes. Things could have been a lot worse. He had done the business with the bath towel himself before. As such, he dispatched his remaining shoe to the sedge growing along the sand line. His socks followed.

By the time the less fortunate gentleman came racing back around, he had turned up his trousers and snuggled his toes in the warm sand.

From there, he waved.

Lux had crossed enough dimensional barriers to know when the door to Mariko's office shifted halfway through, depositing her in--

Someone's home, a planet and probably at least a few centuries away. The air tasted like Earth, anyway, and not the Earth of the time she'd been freed into.

She looked around, finding no indication at all as to who might have been behind the sudden portal. It wasn't Michaela's style, and Gabriel, of course, wouldn't be nearly this subtle if he actually set out to trap her. One of her other siblings...mm, perhaps, but this didn't feel like a trap.

A random rip in the fabric of reality, then. She sighed I really loathe those.

Well, might as well explore the place, see what it had to offer.

Ace was disoriented as he showed up in the house. He had been warned that dabbling in magic was trouble, but he...wasn't expecting this kind of trouble. Where the fuck was he anyway? He took stock of his surroundings, a house, someone's house.

"Well damn," he said as he walked around the kitchen. He was barefoot, wearing nothing but a pair of athletic shorts, he'd been about to go for a run. Now he was trying to decide if he was going to get shot if someone found out that he was in their house without their leave. Ace made his way to a window and peered out, noting the beach, the pool. Somewhere warm, that was a start.

With a frown he reached into the pocket of his shorts and fished out his phone. "Siri, where am I?" he asked, pressing down on the home button and hoping that robotic little voice had an answer for him.

For the third time, Isshiri found himself, instead of somewhere exciting where he wasn't supposed to be, somewhere really exciting where he really wasn't supposed to be.

This one looked like someone's house, maybe; probably from someone like Daddy's family who was rich and important enough for nice things but not so rich and important they had to Impress People. He poked his head into a room full of books and then--

And then he glanced through a huge window, at what was outside,--a huge kind of water, the kind he'd only ever read about. Maybe even an ocean.

Isshiri clapped his hands in delight and scrambled over to a window to get a closer look.

There was magic in the air, Sayer could all but taste it, and being transported to a strange place while walking through a doorway, well. If that wasn't magic, Sayer didn't know what was.

Sand. She sniffed and gripped the handle of her cane as she walked down the path from the gate she walked through. Sand was never the friend of a person who used a cane for assistance. It wasn't long before she spotted the man on the beach and approached him warily.

"Hello," she said, her voice carrying across the distance between them. She took stock of him, like she was measuring him. Sayer did not try and hide this outright observation.

"Jezebel, do you have any insight into this predicament?"

When Jezebel failed to answer, Skuld scooped her into her arms and provided a squeaky voiceover: "Damnit, Skuld. I'm cat. This is not my department."

Which was to say "merw" as it actually came out on Jezebel's end.

Skuld, ha having no natural protections against the adorableness that was a giant angora going "merw", squeaked and rubbed her face in Jezebel's fur. It was from this vantage she waved to Ace.

Ace waved back, in a rather wary motion, as Siri failed to provide him with a location. "I don't think that cats typically answer back," he said when he found his voice. "And I take it you do not live here, either?" he asked as he raised an eyebrow, his arms crossing against his chest.

If that was the case. Fuck. Fuck. Just how much stranger could his day get? No, wait, he never wanted to ask that question, or it would surpass his weirdness measuring system. Which was already rather vast.

Well! If this wasn't an improvement to any and all situations. Henri paused just half a second before he made eye contact with Sayer. Her gaze had such a gravity to it. Which he minded not at all, though even in strange lands he had a reputation to maintain.

Still, he was perhaps a bit lax in matters of repressing his grin.

"Good afternoon. Anyway, it appears to be afternoon and if there are any drinks to be had, I for one shall choose to believe it is after noon."

In the absence of a hat, he tipped his head.

"Merw," Jezebel re-iterated.

"Shh," said Skuld, scratching her ears. "Stop making a liar out of the nice man."

No further protests followed.

"Anyway, no. I'm sorry. I don't. I'm also not sure how we got here, where the food is or if we're about to be called in to do battle in giant robots. We'll just have to wait and see."

None of those sentiments being the sort usually smile through, but Skuld did that nonetheless.

Sayer lifted her eyes to the horizon and nodded. "Mid-afternoon, perhaps," she agreed as she turned her gaze back to Henri. She did not return the grin with one of her own, however her lips quirked up. Just for a moment.

"I would not object to finding drinks," she commented. "There appears to be a home up the edge of the beach. If you would excuse the needs of an old woman."

Sayer looked neither old or frail as she lifted her cane in illustration. "You may call me Sayer, if you wish," she told him, but there was no fishing for his own name. Sayer assumed people would give them, or not, at their whim.

"The kitchen is behind us, just down the hall," Ace answered that comment first. "And as for giant robots," he shrugged and gave the woman a smile of his own, "find me someone drift compatible and I'll suit up and do my duty to protecting the land. Whatever this land is," his gaze dropped back to his phone as he glared at it, like it was Siri's fault he was in some unknown house with an unknown woman and her cat.

"Well, I am a little peckish and the thing about other people's kitchens is..." Skuld began, speaking just a little too quiet and too fast, there in the way of someone playing at furtive but absolutely not invested in the concept with anything approaching sincerity.

That ended rather quickly though, her enthusiasm sneaking back in. "Wait, wait, wait. Giant robots? For real? Like, can regular people use them? Not just fun-size people in the military? I mean, I'm sure the military thing is OK if that's what it is, but you gotta be under like 5'6" to pilot the ones back home and they're top heavy. Allegedly."

Lux nodded to the woman sitting on the couch--possibly she lived here, she certainly had that level of comfort with the room.

On the other hand, her clothing was all pre-Contact. Which meant there was no way of telling how she would react to a non-human being, once she got a chance to see more than 'essentially humanoid.' Too late for a glamour, not that it would have done much more than smooth out her proportions. Lux shifted her posture as much as she could, to appear as human as she could. "I apologize," she said. "This was supposed to be my friend's office." 'Friend' was closer to accurate than 'girlfriend,' since their reunion, though still probably stretching the truth a little bit. "Apparently her door has a mind of its own."

"A pleasure to meet you then, Sayer," Henri returned. Though he felt a certain temptation towards "Miz Sayer", he thought better of it. Sometimes, the absence of an honorific said more than any such word could.

He also gave the beach a bit of a parting glance, saying as he did, "Perhaps this sea is better appreciated from on high. At the very least, the theory bears testing. If I may join you, then?"

There was something... off, about the other. She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but...

If Jack or Charlotte turned up here, she would not allow them anywhere near. That she was sure of.

Lux arched an eyebrow. "Does it? Interesting. Always to this house, or you've been caught in other...sentient doorways, leading somewhere completely unrelated?"

The human's posture was relaxed, but Lux was fairly certain she was more than a little wary. Well, despite Lux's efforts at discretion, this was hardly unexpected. There was a reason Gabriel prefaced all his announcements with 'don't be afraid,' after all.

"I am," Siebenkas answered. "Intentional or not, a beach is a beach and..."

A pair of gulls in the midst of a disagreement wheeled past overhead and towards the waves. They left him to a smile; a long, lazy stretch.

One he swung out of in an almost childlike fashion. "You were at the bar with in the White Rabbit. You're familiar with this situation."

Word had just come in from the wall--Kellom was dead, something about a water-mage and the Glass prince. Which meant things were either going to go straight to hell in a big way or somehow the situation might be salvaged.

Mellir's guards were trying to take him somewhere safe, defensible, so that Feredar wouldn't lose two kings in as many hours, but he ignored them. He needed to find Sola and Keta--he'd need their adv--no, not their advice. Well, Sola's, yes, but Keta...Keta would need to hide. And probably Tana, too, and he needed Deflati and Dila and his other children and--

"Make sure my children are safe," he ordered, doing his best to sound Regal, then dodged them with the ease of a spoiled teenager who'd spent far too much time ducking the law, heading for--

Well, it didn't quite matter where he was headed, did it. Since he certainly didn't get there.

"What in the name of all the gods...?"
