Caught Sweetly Between Love and Family
This year, Valentine's Day neatly flanks the weekend for Family Day in my province, so I thought I'd propose a mini-challenge to help shake the snow off those stories you may have in hibernation.

Promote this Event
- The Challenge
- 💗 Each entry should be between 100-1000 words long.
- 💗 Writing can be done individually, or with a partner (RP should be polished up to read comfortably, either from one POV or with smooth transitions between POV’s), or borrowing another member’s setting or characters (so long as you have permission from the other person!)
- 💗 You may use any active colours, styles, and supplies to accompany this challenge as you like. I'd suggest pink, white, or red colours. If you're looking to start a new colour (remember you can have a max of 5 active at one time, and in each entry, you can only use one prompt from a single colour, up to three colours total), I've put together a spreadsheet here to help you get started.
- 💗 Entries must be completed by Tuesday, February 19th.
- 💗 Please refresh yourself on the Community Rules if you are new or have been absent for some time.
- 💗 Please post entries in
rainbowfic, using the appropriate header found in the rules. If you need a new tag (eg: "author: [your name]" or "story: [your story's name]", please use the tag "! needs tags" and we'll get that added ASAP. Use these tags for each new entry.- 💗 You may use other writing community prompts and cross-post to other communities, however, if cross-posting outside of
rainbowfic, ask permission first if you use another person's character, setting, etc. If they are not comfortable with their IP being cross-posted elsewhere, keep it inside this community.
- OPTION ONE:
- 💘 Write about a particular relationship, event, or character’s perspective anywhere on the spectrum of romantic love and family. Entries don’t have to be fluffy, but even if a character is in a rough patch or of an evil disposition it would be good to pick out a silver lining somewhere in the entry.
- OPTION TWO:
- 💘 Icebreakers and intra-character smishes! Fill out the form below for any characters you'd like to offer for this event. Then, write a short blurb that involves one of your characters hugging theirs, making introductions, being friendly, offering chocolates, or otherwise offering some friendly TLC. Note that if you submit a character via the form, you're giving permission for somebody else to write for them (for this event only). You may wish to AU your character into their setting or vice versa. Have fun!
- Rewards
- 💗 Each entry will garner one novelty bead (at the discretion of the mods).
- 💗 If you submit at least one entry, you can win a special holiday badge, obtainable after Tuesday, February 19th. Get that trophy! Spread that love!
- Special Tiers
- 💘 Depending on turn-out and participation, I will also award badges based on most entries in each category above, Best Hug, Mushiest Moment, Friendliest Folks, and maybe others. Invite a friend, do some collab-work, or remind another old-time participant to come drop by for a visit and a few more awards. Let me know if you have promoted this event outside of rainbowfic, and I will create a special badge for your effort.

Character Sheets for the event
Akadine and Owen
Character Gender/Pronouns: She/her
Character's Story: Everwood, a fantasy set in a frontiersy, mountainous forest in which all sorts of mythological creatures and magic are real.
Notable Favourites: She likes to hoard pretty things, gold, liquor, etc.
How sociable are they?: Very! Brash and informal, and tends towards self-possessed (and possessive of friends, if given reason to)
Hug Style?: Bony and crushing, a little like a man's killer handshake.
Willing to have your character AU'd?: She's currently a retired mercenary (used to guard caravans coming in and out of the kingdom to remote villages) and is raising a couple of girls. She's also secretly a dragon in human form. Feel free to AU her into a different setting, or hand-wave that she and another character have met (friendship or rivalry are all good. Romance, probably no.)
Special Requests: Tavern buds, 'collect the shinies', knife sparring, or shapeshifter confessionals (listening, very very leery about sharing) are all welcome!

Character Gender/Pronouns: He/him
Character's Story: Everwood, a fantasy set in a frontiersy, mountainous forest in which all sorts of mythological creatures and magic are real.
Notable Favourites: Gifts with refined qualities, tokens from distant lands, or fascinating magic or technological properties.
How sociable are they?: Politely affable, observant and a little genteel. Observes all the respect and honour that a new acquaintance deserves, and remains friendly with those who aren't familiar with the niceties of court.
Hug Style?: He wears gloves and prefers a bow, tip of the hat, or a handshake... but he'll go for a side-hug shoulder-pat if pressed.
Willing to have your character AU'd?: Currently an immortal who wanders and takes scientific notes on everything out of the ordinary. He harbours some wack fire magic that seems to be fueled from an internal source nobody knows about, rather than rote magic. I'm comfy with having him AU'd to some equivalent in another setting, as friends, old-flames/exes, etc.
Special Requests: Nerds bonding over discovering alien tech, or another character being poked and prodded? Trying to out-formal one another?

Character's Story: Shine Like It Does, a modern semi-family semi-thriller semi-romance depending on whose story you're following.
Notable Favourites: Her siblings, getting one over on someone who deserves it, real churros (she's Mexican-American), dancing.
How sociable are they?: She's good at small talk and bad at opening up.
Hug Style?: She'll go stiff and then relax, but it might take a while before the relaxing.
Willing to have your character AU'd?: Sure! In canon she's a lawyer.
Special Requests: She never really thinks that she does GOOD things, so her doing something good for someone and having that expressed to her would be great.
Restrictions: Um... I don't think I have any? She's fun to write, have fun.
Character Name: Olivia Marhenke
Character Gender/Pronouns: she/her
Character's Story: In the Heart, a modern day slice of life family story.
Notable Favourites: Music, chocolate, cute earrings, sunny days.
How sociable are they?: Very, unless she's in a depressive episode. She's outgoing and likes people as a general rule.
Hug Style?: Warm and soft, as she's quite chubby.
Willing to have your character AU'd?: Sure! In canon she bounces between retail jobs and teaches piano.
Special Requests: Making music together, hanging out, being friends, someone expressing pride in her.

I hope I didn't muck her characterization too badly!
Kaitan and Tuanada
Character Gender/Pronouns: She/Her
Character's Story: Fensirt, in a fantasy desert city inhabited by humans and various kinds of creatures called daemons.
Notable Favourites: Wilderness camping, big rideable animals, big meals, people who respect her autonomy.
How sociable are they?: Capriciously. When she relaxes she's quite ebullient, but as a teenager (she's 14) she's more often quite defensive or surly.
Hug Style?: When she decides do, she'd hug like a skinny, short vice. If not, she's wiggling right out of the hug.
Willing to have your character AU'd?: Absolutely! I love AUs! With the fantasy trappings stripped away, she's an orphan who's been taken in by her cousins, whose original family died violently. She's very unsure of her place in the world and scared of many things, with some unresolved trauma that makes her a bit unpredictable, but she's fiercely driven to find her place and make herself relevant.
Special Requests: I'd love to see some adult who takes her under their wing, who can weather the testing she gives them.
Restrictions: It should go without saying since she's a kid, but no smut.
Character Name: Tuanada Rider
Character Gender/Pronouns: He/Him
Character's Story: Fensirt, in a fantasy desert city inhabited by humans and various kinds of creatures called daemons. He is one of the latter, and looks like this (top pic).
Notable Favourites: Candied jerky, long walks in the desert, well-told stories, getting his hair braided (although this is quite an intimate thing for a Rider daemon!)
How sociable are they?: Not exceptionally. He's comfortable around people but does not feel the need to put himself out there. He's not very outgoing, but he's patient and thoughtful, and he's a very good listener. He just likes to let people approach him, rather than the other way around.
Hug Style?: Engulfing. He'll flop on a body and purr. He gives very very good hugs.
Willing to have your character AU'd?: Absolutely! He'd AU well into a big quiet biker dude or something. He's sort of middling-young-adult, twenties-ish, though everyone seems to think he's older because he's so serious. He's had one serious relationship that's fallen through (not a romantic one, but the daemon equivalent), and he's fairly self-contained now.
Special Requests: Go wild!
Restrictions: Again, no smut, unless you're AUing him into a human or your person into a daemon. His species also doesn't really do romantic relationships, so that's not likely.
