Spring RP: The Hennessy Home

The house sits on a bluff above the sea, with a winding path down to a sandy beach leading away from the yard. It is three stories high, stucco and terracotta, and would look forbiddingly expensive were it not for the worn tire swing hanging from a tree and the flip-flops left strewn around the outdoor pool.

Inside, the house looks much the same--expensive but lived-in. A grand piano, clearly used, dominates one room. Another room has couches and chairs neatly arranged like a museum, with beat-up books and magazines filling its shelves and cupboards. It is light and airy, with huge windows, a well-stocked kitchen, and first-rate entertainment systems.

The first and second floors seem to be generalized living spaces, with the bedrooms on the third floor. The master bedroom is the only exception, and the only one that still seems in use. Multiple other rooms, especially on the third floor, look dusty and unused.

((welcome to the RP, writers! Let the games begin.))

Lux had crossed enough dimensional barriers to know when the door to Mariko's office shifted halfway through, depositing her in--

Someone's home, a planet and probably at least a few centuries away. The air tasted like Earth, anyway, and not the Earth of the time she'd been freed into.

She looked around, finding no indication at all as to who might have been behind the sudden portal. It wasn't Michaela's style, and Gabriel, of course, wouldn't be nearly this subtle if he actually set out to trap her. One of her other siblings...mm, perhaps, but this didn't feel like a trap.

A random rip in the fabric of reality, then. She sighed I really loathe those.

Well, might as well explore the place, see what it had to offer.

Miranda sat up when the other person entered the room, and raised an eyebrow. "Hello?"

Re: Lux

Lux nodded to the woman sitting on the couch--possibly she lived here, she certainly had that level of comfort with the room.

On the other hand, her clothing was all pre-Contact. Which meant there was no way of telling how she would react to a non-human being, once she got a chance to see more than 'essentially humanoid.' Too late for a glamour, not that it would have done much more than smooth out her proportions. Lux shifted her posture as much as she could, to appear as human as she could. "I apologize," she said. "This was supposed to be my friend's office." 'Friend' was closer to accurate than 'girlfriend,' since their reunion, though still probably stretching the truth a little bit. "Apparently her door has a mind of its own."

Re: Lux

Miranda shrugged, and leaned back against the couch back. Her suit was wrinkling, but who cared. "That's all right. This... happens, occasionally."

There was something... off, about the other. She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but...

If Jack or Charlotte turned up here, she would not allow them anywhere near. That she was sure of.

Re: Lux

[personal profile] shadowsong26 2014-05-24 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Lux arched an eyebrow. "Does it? Interesting. Always to this house, or you've been caught in other...sentient doorways, leading somewhere completely unrelated?"

The human's posture was relaxed, but Lux was fairly certain she was more than a little wary. Well, despite Lux's efforts at discretion, this was hardly unexpected. There was a reason Gabriel prefaced all his announcements with 'don't be afraid,' after all.

Re: Lux

[personal profile] bookblather 2014-05-24 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
"Somewhere else," Miranda said, dryly. "Once it was a bar. My brother's been to at least two other places besides. This..." she waved at her parents' house, "is probably the first time. I think I would have heard if it wasn't."

Re: Lux

[personal profile] shadowsong26 2014-05-24 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
"So, you know this place?" she asked, then nodded at one of the chairs. "May I?" Only polite to ask, in someone else's home, after all--and Lux had been right in reading the human's posture. She did belong here, in some fashion.

Re: Lux

"Certainly," Miranda said, and her back straightened almost unconsciously at the formality.

Good God, had Grandmother Hennessy actually rubbed off on her? The thought was terrifying.

"I do," she added, answering the question. "It's my parents' house. I lived here until I was twenty-three."

"Aha," Lux said, settling into the chair. Human, she reminded herself, and did her best to copy the other's posture. "Yes, I suppose you would know if random holes in reality started opening up in your childhood home."

Re: Lux

"One would expect," Miranda said, "although of course I suppose it's possible I wouldn't, had I not been walking into my apartment when I arrived here." She cocked an eyebrow at the other-- and now why was her brain refusing to follow that with 'human?' "Your friend will be expecting you?"

Re: Lux

[personal profile] shadowsong26 2014-05-24 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Lux nodded. "Yes, though I'm a little earlier than planned. Hopefully if time distorts, it'll work in my favor." She shrugged, hiding the brief flare of pain from the wounds where her wings used to be with the ease of long practice. "Was anyone expecting you at home?"

Re: Lux

"Thank God, no," Miranda said, with the first real emotion she'd shown in... since at least lunch with Mama, good lord. "For the record, I believe very little time passes wherever you come from."

Re: Lux

[personal profile] shadowsong26 2014-05-24 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Good," Lux said. It gave her a better chance of being able to explain his disappearance to Mariko without having to go into too much detail, and before she could learn of his escape from another source. "And I'm glad you won't be missed. Or at least that you're glad you won't be missed?" she followed, after realizing that some humans might find the first comment to be slightly offensive.

Miranda arched an eyebrow, and let the silence hang for just a beat too long, before saying, "It is a good thing. I did have a date with my wine though."

Re: Lux

And she'd blundered. Damn it. The problem with blending into a human world used to nonhumans--it made it difficult to blend in to one less open. She had no idea how Gabriel managed to do it as well as he did.

Well, at least she was handling this better than Michaela ever could have.

"Good wine makes one of the best dates," Lux agreed.

Re: Lux

[personal profile] shadowsong26 2014-05-24 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
"What kind of bad day was it?" Lux asked. "Professional, romantic, familial, other personal...?" She shook her head. "Sorry if asking is rude, but it seems the sort of thing to discuss anonymously in another dimension."

Re: Lux

[personal profile] bookblather 2014-05-24 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
It seemed a little rude, but then again that was what these bloody things were for. "Professionally. I don't really have a romantic life." Unless you counted being fucked against the bathroom wall of a club somewhere, but that was much too personal. "My family... it doesn't really go poorly."

Re: Lux

[personal profile] shadowsong26 2014-05-24 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Lucky you," Lux said, before she could stop herself, then tried to shift the subject before the human could ask for details. The last thing she needed was to get started on the civil war. "My friend is a translator. She has quite a few professional bad days under her belt." It was easier for them to talk about Mariko's work than just about anything else, lately, so Lux had heard quite a bit of it. "What do you do, professionally?"

Re: Lux

[personal profile] bookblather 2014-05-24 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
Here eyebrows went up a little, and she said, "I take it you are not personally blessed with a family as harmonious as mine. As for my profession, I'm a lawyer." She usually left it at that, unless her conversation partner knew enough to ask.
shadowsong26: (lux)

Re: Lux

[personal profile] shadowsong26 2014-05-24 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Damn. Well, humans were perceptive creatures. It wasn't exactly surprising that this one hadn't let Lux drop the subject. "Not exactly, no. What kind of lawyer? Contracts or criminals?"
bookblather: Natalie Dormer looking smugly off-camera. (Miranda Hennessy: Natalie Dormer)

Re: Lux

[personal profile] bookblather 2014-05-24 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Contracts," Miranda said, and wondered whether to ask about the family. Probably not, she decided, unless this other was getting uncomfortably close to a sore spot of her own. "Unfortunately, usually corporate clients."
shadowsong26: (lux)

Re: Lux

[personal profile] shadowsong26 2014-05-24 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Lux nodded. "Mariko, my friend, used to work for a diplomat. She now works for a corporation. I know she vastly preferred the first job." Of course, then she saw something she shouldn't have and I had to take it all away from her. I wonder which she blames me more for--the people I killed, or the future I warped?

Re: Lux

[personal profile] bookblather 2014-05-24 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Corporations seem to think they're above the law," Miranda said. "At least tomorrow I get to work with a nonprofit. They're much more reasonable, generally speaking."

And of course this particular nonprofit was run by Peter Edleson, whose crooked smile she was quite looking forward to seeing again. Her expression softened just a bit.

Re: Lux

[personal profile] shadowsong26 2014-05-24 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's a good way of putting it," Lux mused. Certainly even the better employees of Red Sky fell into that category, and when she considered the scientist who had been working with her nephew...at least Mariko hadn't been infected by that sort of viewpoint.

Of course, there were some--many--laws that were beneath most people, but Lux knew full well those weren't the kind that the human was talking about. "What does the nonprofit you're working with do?"
