Spring RP: The Hennessy Home

The house sits on a bluff above the sea, with a winding path down to a sandy beach leading away from the yard. It is three stories high, stucco and terracotta, and would look forbiddingly expensive were it not for the worn tire swing hanging from a tree and the flip-flops left strewn around the outdoor pool.

Inside, the house looks much the same--expensive but lived-in. A grand piano, clearly used, dominates one room. Another room has couches and chairs neatly arranged like a museum, with beat-up books and magazines filling its shelves and cupboards. It is light and airy, with huge windows, a well-stocked kitchen, and first-rate entertainment systems.

The first and second floors seem to be generalized living spaces, with the bedrooms on the third floor. The master bedroom is the only exception, and the only one that still seems in use. Multiple other rooms, especially on the third floor, look dusty and unused.

"I hear you. Thanks for being so understanding. Sheee's her own cat. Yes she is. Naughty Jezebel."

Jezebel gave Charlotte's hand a sniff. Then another. And finally decided in putting her own paw upon it in the manner of a dog offering a shake, albeit somewhat upside-down.

"And apparently she does that in /other/ people's houses too! Yours is totally sweet, by the way. I mean, I'm sorry for intruding, but at the same time I'm really happy I got to see. What a view!"

"Hello, Jezebel," Charlotte said, and solemnly patted the cat's paw. "She's a lovely cat, so pretty and fluffy! I'm Charlotte, by the way. Welcome." She glanced up and offered a smile.

Jezebel responded to this by headbutting Charlotte's hand and trilling.

"Thank you so much! Looks like you made her happy too. I'm Skuld- as in the Norn, not as in toast -and you're Charlotte as in Charles as in Karl as in Karlaz meaning 'free *person*."

The emphasis on "person" being fairly sneezed with assistance it was that rather than "man", Skuld held out her hand.

Jezebel gave her quite a look for it.

Charlotte's smile got broader, and she took Skuld's hand and shook gently. "I'm very pleased to meet you, Skuld. I don't think I've heard the name before in any format, and I definitely didn't know mine meant free person." She tilted her head, then asked, "Do you happen to know what Miranda means? Or Jackson?"

"Miranda's a character n /The Tempest/, but the name was being used as surname on the Iberian peninsula long before that. It's made it out of 'Mirandus' meaning 'awesome' in Latin."

Skuld thought on Jackson for a moment as Jezebel made another circuit of Charlotte's legs, heavy on the head-bangs and tail flickers.

"Jackson, well, that's Jack's Son and Jack is tricky. On one hand, it's related to Jacob and John. On the other, it's also like 'that guy over there', the name. A lot of people who met the devil were named Jack, but people also used to say it instead of 'devil'. Which I think is pretty cool, but if you don't, I'm sure your Jack is perfectly sweet at least most of the time."

"Most of the time is right," Charlotte said, although she felt a little guilty for saying it, because really Jack did try. It was just that he... well, Skuld didn't want to know any of that. She went on stroking Jezebel. "We do love him, really. Also, it's really from Spain? Miranda, I mean. I didn't know that, I don't think any of us did."

"Sure does," Skuld answered. "Way back in the renaissance, even. Although, it's probably older than that, accounting for lost records and all that. And assuming this earth had the same Renaissance mine did, which might be kind of a big assumption now that I think about it."

Jezebel trilled, her latest headbutt coming up audible against Charlotte's skin.

"You know, that's an interesting assortment of names. Free person. Awesome person. Generic person..."

Charlotte snorted inelegantly and startled Jezebel. "I'm sorry," she said, and chirruped a bit, petting at Jezebel's ears. "It was just, my brother is anything but generic. I'm... now that you put it that way, I'm really not sure how my parents came up with our names. Mine at least is a family name."

"That's OK! That's OK!" Skuld insisted, snickering herself, Jezebel looking on with an ear-turning disinterest. "Anyway, if it was me? I'd have picked those for maximum irony! But, since it wasn't that, you should totally ask if, you know, your parents are around and they don't mind. That's a good thing to know! It might make a cute story and you could publish it or at least tell people and grin."

Saying so, grins ensued.
