RP Time? You betcha!
"Lucien? What did I tell you about running off on your own?"
Somewhat unsurprisingly, his son didn't answer him with more than a grin. And a splash, once Claude had drawn closer.
Leave it to any child of his to throw off his nice new boots just to stick his feet in the first likely looking stream that came along.
It wasn't even as if they'd gone that far out of town, but away from the roads, from the other sorcer-sorts and Aethies, even the breeze felt calmer, though it had hardly caught to much all the while they'd been walking. Claude being glad they had any at all, as hot as it had been the past few days.
The storm the night before had left lacy scatters of twigs and leaves and knocked down spider webs. Clean and still damp, the leaves overhead and tangled in the grass, they looked pieces of stained glass. And the trees, when they nodded, they sounded clear as harp strings with nothing else to cut the sound.
Out of farmland use and the whiles of any humans at all, the stream had been left so clear, so delicious looking. Just begging for some little blond imp of a boy to come along and kick his heels in it.
Well, one already had. Claude didn't bother with another sigh. He pulled his shoes off and laid them in the stones at his side, stretching lazy as he reached his own toes towards the glittering surface.
And promptly jerked back with a yelp. "Child of mine? That's /cold/."
"I know," said Lucien. "I think it feels nice."
"Maybe if you're part bear. I've always halfway figured, you know."
They had some teasing hums between them and Claude crossed his legs, feet now on the warm pebbles along the bank where they damnwell belonged.
"I think I got that from your side of the family," his son suggested after a while. "Anyway, why do you think it's like that? I don't hear anybody around."
"That wasn't tagging along?"
"Well..." The boy knitted his fingers in his hair, tugging himself a wingtip curl along his temple. "I think I'd only notice Nene if she was /gone/."
"And as for our new friends?"
"They couldn't have gone far. They know we have candy." To which, he nodded. Ever so sure of himself.
Ah, children. Children had gotten him this far with their self-assured beings. And children had found him what was really a rather strange clearing on closer inspection. The stream wore deeper through some places in the grass than others, showing shifts of rock, glints of moss and tree roots sneaking by. It divided the clearing just about cleanly in half.
Besides, on the edge of the forest easing back into being, a great, old ash stood.
Covered in tiny flowers. Pink and violet and hints of white. All of them, growing in streaks as if the bark had long ago turned to soil, though the tree seemed healthy and strong otherwise.
Besides.
"Papa," said Lucian, voice hushed. "There aren't any birds here, are there?"
"No," Claude answered after a moment. "It's just you and I and /a bunch of stinkers who ran off from us/."
"Oh, so that doesn't include me?"
"Child of mine."
They had a few more hums, there in the quiet of the clearing.
There, before something very strange and very faint began to creep along Claude's Aether lines.
It felt like being tickled almost. Anyway, it made him smile. Lucien too.
And next, there his son darted off again, racing over the grass and into the middle of the clearing, where he stood staring into the sky and whistling. Expecting a giant Gust to come sailing down in the form of a giant bird? It might just be that.
Welcome!
Note that anything your characters do in the clearing may result in posts back of things happening around them, even if these aren't exactly invited. Something's lurking around here, and it wants a snack!
Feel free to bring your own fairies, ghosts, mages and seriously confused regular people.
Re: Mermaid AU!Setsuko
He was a charming little boy, she supposed, the way he fixed his hair to make it more disarrayed than before.
"So, then," she said, raising her tail out of the water (it was about to cramp in this small stream), "if you're from here, do you know who isn't?"
Re: Mermaid AU!Setsuko
Ooooh!
That was a really pretty tail! Most Aquas didn't make tails with People bodies, not anymore, not since Lucien was around. It wasn't in fashion to look like a fairy tale.
He wanted to touch the glinting scales, but even if Setsuko wasn't an Aqua- and he had started to suspect that this mustn't be the case -you did not go around poking other people's tails. That was rude.
"Hmm. Well, I am dry mostly, so maybe if I said I get heavy and slippery? But slippery is fun! It's the heavy part bothers me and Maman doesn't like me to look pruney. I think."
As for the other thing. "And people, who's supposed to be here- my Aether lines /do/ work, they're just not as good as if I was a sorcerer. That should help." Lucien wanted to believe it would anyway.
Re: Mermaid AU!Setsuko
She raised an eyebrow as Lucien kept talking. "What are Aethers?" she asked. "Are they like you?"
Re: Mermaid AU!Setsuko
Which meant Setsuko really wasn't an Aqua. So, Lucien was right too.
All that rightness at once? He was fairly beaming about it. Oh, and he knew the answer to this one. He'd only been taught it between workings at the precinct since he was old enough to listen.
He picked up a handful of pebbles, water and a few scraps of moss. Which, yes. They had a lot of these things already between them, but this was a good way to demonstrate. And one he had learned from Fernando, or so he seemed to recall.
Setsuko oh so obligingly looked into his fingers.
"What I'm holding now, that's material. It's made of matter that can change. It must have a little Aether in it though, because all things do. Aether is the thing that goes everywhere, between the other elements. You and me, we've got mostly matter in us, so we're Material beings. Aetherial beings are mostly Aether, but they have a little of other elements in them. Like an Aqua is one that has water."
(OOC: in case you need a break from the angst.)

(OOC: MING STOP CLAMMING UP I WANT TO GET TO THE UNDER 15 PROMPTS TO GO CLUB TONIGHT)
Re: Mermaid AU!Setsuko
Lucien nodded excitedly. Aha! He had done it pretty well, sounded like. And shared. Who didn't like to share?
"We do! We do! It's not /exactly/ the Spark of Life. *That*'s an element too. It used to be called that anyway, but most teachers say the Gleam or Primordial Force now. People have a lot of water in them, usually. You probably have more than most if you like the water a lot or have fins."
He tried really hard to come off sagely about that. It /was/true that he knew, but more than that, sitting with Setsuko and having this conversation. Well, why shouldn't people have fish tails?
Re: Mermaid AU!Setsuko
"So what you're telling me is that we all have water in us, but I have just a little more than most," Setsuko said. "Does that mean people like you have more Aether? Or land, even, because you have legs?"
Re: Mermaid AU!Setsuko
Lucien nodded. "It's more that I have extra Aether on me because I spend a lot of time in a precinct with Aethies. My material balance won't change until I get an Aethie or ten of my own. Most People are prettttttty balanced, starting out, but we actually have less gleam than most trees even though most trees can't talk."
Re: Mermaid AU!Setsuko
"Oh, I see," Setsuko said, even more intrigued. "So sometimes you can even get more Aether or water based on whether or not you spend time in a certain place, more often than not?"
She looked down at her tail, curious. "Does that mean if I spent more time on land that I would get more Aether and be able to survive for a longer time?"
Re: Mermaid AU!Setsuko
Well, Maman had always said it was a good student who asked a lot of questions. Setsuko's were getting kinda tricky by them.
But, they were good questions. And this one in particular Lucien enjoyed turning over in his mind.
"OK!" he suddenly found himself just about shouting. And spilling his moss. Which he had indeed been hanging onto all the while. "You are right. That's true! Elements are mobile, some more than others and Gleam most of all. And if you stayed on land, that's exactly the sort of thing that would happen. But, it'd be sloooooooooow."
That, he matched making inch worm motions with his finger.
"So, what sorcer-sorts do is make agreements with Aethies that Aethies and move elements around for them. Most would probably get an Aqua to help you stay in your element, because that's easier, but we could get a Lith! And the Lith could try putting more earth into you. And maybe you'd become amphibious! And that would be COOL!"
Re: Mermaid AU!Setsuko
Setsuko laughed, seeing Lucien so eager to tell her everything. "How long do you think that would take?" she asked, gathering the moss for him. "Although I suppose I could wait quite a while. I've always wanted to explore land, but it would be nice to return to the water once in a while."
Re: Mermaid AU!Setsuko
Oh, how Lucien grinned. Just the teensiest bit of a happy blush sneaking into his cheeks. "We would have to investigate! So, ah, I'm not sure. But, investigating things is fun, usually. Last time, Maman and Papa got alllll the sorcer's guild members in town together at their precinct with their Aethies. It was like a party. We have a pond, and there could be punch..."
(OOC: That is a lovely ring and you should feel lovely for buying it. HELL YES MORE MING. HAPPINESS.)
Re: Mermaid AU!Setsuko
(OOC: I'm wearing it now and I love it. Turns out I was getting rings a half size too small, and this is the first one that fits perfectly, with lots of pretty inclusions in the tourmaline! AND TONIGHT: REACHING HALFTIME. HOPEFULLY. I'm aiming to get this out in a week. We'll see how that goes between retake prep and work.)
Re: Mermaid AU!Setsuko
Lucien snatched back at a giggle. "Punch would be kind of hard to serve under water. But, a lot of sorcer-sorts, they say they work better with something to 'distract their tongues'. Why can't they just say they're hungry and thirsty? Besides, people are in a better mood when they've been fed."
That, he knew as if he'd been born to the truth and not only a talented cook, another at least willing to learn.
Re: Mermaid AU!Setsuko
"Is 'punch' something you drink, then?" Setsuko asked. "I've tried to drink things here before, and it's so strange. How do you manage to take water inside you that way? That would be like me trying to drink...air."
She smiled wryly at Lucien's thoughts on sorcerers. "It's true, being honest would make things so much simpler. It's a rare one who gets hints."
