Fitting that one of my favorite stories of yours is this one. It's just so... clear about what a writer is and does and how one would cope with the apocalypse.

Where do I even start? You're fabulously imaginative, with the most awesometastic descriptions I've ever read. Your characters leap off the page and sometimes start strangling people (sometimes start having sex with them, Zephyr) and are just so vividly real. I just love reading your stories; it's almost like hearing someone read aloud to me. With a hot chocolate voice. With whipped cream on.
Am I allowed to pick this as my favorite, or is that too egotistical? I can't help it, I just adore the way you write Jack and his sisters, and them interacting with Zephyr and Pip brings warm fuzzies to my heart. But if I can't pick that, then thiiiiis fuck yeah this, THAT LAST LINE I still remember it.

As for favorites, do I really have to choose? For right now, I'll pick this, for superlative telepaths and surreal sensory porn and asexy snuggling.

I am both... really pleased and rather sad that you write so well about depression, because I feel like anyone who writes THAT well about it knows what it's like from the inside, and that's not something I'd wish on anyone. But at the same time you capture it so well, all the darkness and the insidious voices and the cruel things people say. Actually, you have a really keen eye for the darker side of humanity, from grief and loss to rage and hatred, and yet you manage to leave hope clear on the other side.
I think this is my favorite of your stories, for all those reasons.

Mort/James
Re: Mort/James
Ugh, where do I start with you? You write James and Mort so well, to start; they feel like genuinely real people to me (and I for one would like to hang out with both of them. James and I could cuddle and Mort and I could watch TV. IT WOULD BE AWESOME). Everything just... works. I know how much effort you put into your writing because I've seen you actually writing and yet the final product doesn't seem as if you put any effort into it at all-- which is meant to be a compliment; you make it look easy.
This will probably always be my favorite but mostly because it makes my inner librarian shriek with joy. But this is a close runner-up, along with anything involving rainbow bubbles, because OH JAMES.

Re: kay_brooke
Ahem. You took a very divergent group of characters and still made them seem like they belong together as part of a singular narrative in "Unusual Florida". You made all of those disparate people worth caring about and their lives real down to these heartbreakingly clear little details.
I am really looking forwards to the novel!

Is my favorite thing you've posted this year, but

Is a close second.
Thank you so much for bringing us such lovely stories!

Your writing blows my MIND. I mean, I look at your universe, where dead void-predators are trains and empaths are weapons and ART IS NOMS. And I'm just- this is what I want to be when I grow up, mommy!
But, it's more than what you write. It's how you approach it. Even the little details are surreal, but then again, even the BIG ONES seem natural. They all fit together in this way that's surprising, but natural.
You have a good thing going and I hope it goes for a very, very long time.
Two of my favorites!

I've... been wondering how to break it to you, so here goes. SOMEDAY I am going to turn that fic into a necklace. The Jewish Grandmothers will look at it and swear with delight. It will be glorious, and more your doing than mine.

It's a bit hard to say this, but I am really blown away by how... mm... accepting isn't the right word, but I've seen that whenever someone has something to say about your writing, you accept it with an extremely rare grace. You're smart and kind and friendly, and that all comes through so clearly in your writing. I think this story (which I haven't commented on yet, bad me) and this one, which are so full of friendship, trust, and compassion, even though the first one involves violence, that... idk. It's wonderful to read.

Favorites are hard to pick, but I suppose if I had to choose: this one, and this one, and this one!
