Winter RP: The Citadel

It's late afternoon, just approaching evening, and one of the less-imposing reception rooms in the Citadel at the heart of the City of Glass is lit up by a glorious sunset. The dry heat of the desert day is starting to die off; the temperature sits at a pleasant level now.

The walls of the room are made of thick, solid glass panes, in deceptively delicate white stone frames. They are punctuated at regular intervals by wall hangings embroidered with intricate geometric patterns, in green and gold. There is a large, extravagant rug, woven in similar colors, covering the floor. The ceiling, high above, is more glass, fogged, and gilded around the edges to match the gold in the tapestries.

One wall is dominated by a pair of double doors that swing open onto an enclosed pleasure garden, with carefully maintained flowers climbing the walls and a murmuring fountain in the center. There are white gravel paths marking out four regular quadrants.

The portals are opening once again...

"Just the one," Morgan said. "Older brother. He's nice but we're not super close. You?"

"Two sisters," Isshiri replied. "Nolani's older, Kirana's younger. And there's our cousin, Riluke, who was raised with us and is practically another sister."

"Huh," Morgan said, for lack of anything else to say. "You all close?"

He nodded. "Riluke and Kirana don't live here anymore, but we stay in contact as much as possible. And since I got home, I've been spending a lot of time with Nolani and her favorite."

Favorite what? Morgan blinked. "Well, that must be nice. I guess."

"It is. Lady Lonura is...she's very kind. I like her a lot. She's good for my sister." He smiled. "What about you and your brother? I know you said you weren't very close, but do you write each other much?"

"Not really," Morgan said. Oh, so, favorite basically meant concubine then? Or that was zir's best guess. "We mostly keep in touch with Facebook."

"What's Facebook?" Isshiri asked. All he could come up with was the obvious, literal meaning, and magic didn't work like that. It didn't give inanimate objects faces or voices. Well, adept sound-mages could project from inanimate objects, but Isshiri was pretty sure that wasn't what Morgan meant.

"It's a website," Morgan said, and then added, "Uh. A website is... we've got this thing called the internet. It lets you access a lot of things more or less immediately, and a website is a place on it, that's got information or whatever. Facebook's basically a giant meeting place for people who might not live near each other."

"...my cousin would love that," he said. Riluke was all about building large webs of information. If she had access to something like this Internet Morgan was telling him about... "Of course, she'd probably use it to--well, help somebody conquer the world," he corrected himself. Riluke wasn't much for direct power.

"Well, that's the thing about the internet," Morgan said, "if you have a computer and a modem, or a computer and a local coffee shop, or even just a local library, you can use it. I mean, something like 20% of Americans don't have at-home access but they do have local libraries that provide it for free, so it's a really, really common resource. I'm sure spies and the like use it, but you'd have to be really careful, because somebody can always find what you've put on there."

"Right," he said. "Of course, that makes sense. Still, you're so lucky, to have such an easy flow of information back and forth." He subconsciously reached for his collar-scar again.

"Definitely," Morgan agreed. "I can talk to my brother and my girlfriend. Wouldn't be able to without the internet." Zie might have left out the girlfriend part, except he had clearly mentioned that his sister had a girlfriend--or favorite, whatever-- so he was probably cool with queer people. Not that there was exactly a word for what Morgan was, because language hadn't caught up with gender variance yet, but whatever.

"Oh! You have a girlfriend? What's she like?" In Isshiri's experience, people were often--not always, but often--willing to talk for a long time about their lovers, and that often said more than they realized about themselves, as well. Asking was a way to get to know people a little better, without asking rude, direct, prying questions.

"She's amazing," Morgan said, starting straight off with the important information. "Her name is Paige, and she's just so nice and smart and funny, I can't believe she's going out with me, you know? Plus, and this is the awesome thing, she's raising her half-sister because their dad is a fucktard and their brother doesn't have a lot of time, so Kayleigh lives with Paige. And I guess she's a teenager, you know how that goes, but Paige is so patient with her and basically I just really love her." Zie grinned, a little stupidly, the way zie always did when thinking about Paige. "What about you, you got somebody?"

Isshiri's mind immediately went to Mel, which was ridiculous because gods only knew if--and, besides, the two of them had escaped hell together, which was probably--

He flushed and shook his head. "I...ah, no, no, I'm not...I'm not seeing anyone." He cleared his throat. "Your girlfriend sounds wonderful.

((OOC: So apparently this Isshiri comes from the Gay!Isshiri AU. Good to know!))

"She is wonderful," Morgan said, and then added with a grin, "And you're lying. Might not have somebody but you want to, huh?"

He flushed, if possible, even darker. Maybe asking about Morgan's girlfriend hadn't been the best idea after all. "I...it's...well, the thing is...he...I don't...we escaped together, from...from somewhere awful, and I don't know if that's why...it's complicated. Of course, that's even assuming he favors boys, which I think he does, but I can't be sure, and...this sort of thing is hard."

"Oh," Morgan said. "One of those. Well, Captain Awkward says you should always ask your crush out, because you really have nothing to lose."

"I'll have to find him again first," Isshiri said, trying not to be too gloomy. "Which means I have to convince Mother to let me leave the country..."

Morgan blinked. "Convince your mother? Why don't you just go?" Not that zie could really talk, but at least zie supported zirself.

Isshiri made a face. "Same reason I got stabbed. Politics." Though, to be fair, his getting stabbed actually had nothing to do with Mother--well, except for the part that she'd probably been pulling strings to get Uncle King to declare war for years, and whether she'd deliberately meant it to be him or not, that was why he'd been sent to Feredar, and brought the information which had led to the declaration, which had led to the backlash, which had led to him bleeding on the floor.

"Well, that sucks," Morgan said. "I'm glad politics doesn't really affect me." Zie paused. "Well, mostly because people don't believe I exist but whatever."

He blinked. "You don't...but you seem completely real to me. And I've had hallucinations before--fevers that high are not fun." Of course, there were also supposedly drugs that could induce them, and that might be fun, someday. For the experience.

"Oh, uh," Morgan said. "I'm real, people just insist I'm not who I am. Which is genderqueer, by the way. Don't know if you people have that kind of label here." Zir back stiffened unconsciously.
