Winter RP: The Citadel

It's late afternoon, just approaching evening, and one of the less-imposing reception rooms in the Citadel at the heart of the City of Glass is lit up by a glorious sunset. The dry heat of the desert day is starting to die off; the temperature sits at a pleasant level now.

The walls of the room are made of thick, solid glass panes, in deceptively delicate white stone frames. They are punctuated at regular intervals by wall hangings embroidered with intricate geometric patterns, in green and gold. There is a large, extravagant rug, woven in similar colors, covering the floor. The ceiling, high above, is more glass, fogged, and gilded around the edges to match the gold in the tapestries.

One wall is dominated by a pair of double doors that swing open onto an enclosed pleasure garden, with carefully maintained flowers climbing the walls and a murmuring fountain in the center. There are white gravel paths marking out four regular quadrants.

The portals are opening once again...

Well, damn.

Maybe this was all just what she got for listening to Duclos, considering some of the things, substances and people the two of them had gotten up to back in the day. "Oh, the new place makes their own gin." In retrospect, how did that /not/ come with the caveat of "and it will send you on a trip to a glass room that smells like the most amazing flowers ever".

But, it had gotten her out of the meeting with the "specialty financial consultant".

Vola specifically chose not to argue with what had befallen her. As far as hallucinations went, she could have done a /hell/ of a lot worse. This one was pretty cozy, so far as those went and enormous, echoing spaces could be.

She just kind of wasn't sure about the little, redheaded girl. Why, she was all by herself, and even in a dream bestowed by suspect gin, that didn't suit Vola. She thought of her little sisters and the fit she'd have had if they'd managed to escape into a place like this, unaccompanied.

Wait. Best not to assume. A guardian dragon could pop out of the wall at any time.

Vola held her distance, drinking in the delicious aroma (not quite as intoxicating as liquor, but awfully close in the dream), but definitely keeping an eye on the girl.

(OOC- wait. Isn't Vola Summer's great(x many) grand niece from the future XD?)

(OOC: She may actually be. XD)

Summer rolled her head to press her cheek against the glass, and saw the lady standing and watching her. She was a very pretty lady, and Summer thought maybe she wanted to talk-- that was what it meant when people stared at you, wasn't it? Lars and Mama and Papa and Ivy and Aaron all said not to talk to strangers, but there wasn't anybody but strangers here, and lots of them, so if the pretty lady was mean she could run away and scream and somebody would help her.

Decided, she went up to the pretty lady and said, "Hello. Did you want to talk to me? You were staring."

"Sorry. Didn't mean to..." Vola muttered, glancing momentarily at the ceiling before realizing she had just excused herself to a child who was more than likely at least half gin-based apparition. She swung herself back in a heartbeat. "Didn't mean to stare. We can sure can talk. Are you here all by yourself? Because, well, I am too."

"That's okay," Summer replied. "I stare a lot. Mama tells me not to but how do you see anything properly if you don't stare?" She shrugged, and then said, "Yes. I'm alone. I didn't mean to wander off but I guess I did anyway."

Huh. Well, she did have an mom, this kid. Just- not there. Kind of like Vola's mom was /also/ distinctly not there. It made entirely too much sense. "It's OK. I'm sure your mom understands. And me, I didn't mean to wander away either, but here I am and all my grownup stuff stayed back where I came from."

"That's a shame," Summer said, after a minute. "All my things are at home too. Mama will take me back there when we're finished shopping." She put a hand on the wall again. "I really like the glass here. Do you?"

Hmm. Thoughtful little whippersnapper. She was going to make somebody a fine PA someday. Ooh, or investment adviser. Like, one of the eccentric ones who worked downtown, but actually owned property in the old mansion district which they filled with carousels.

More than that, Vola had to admit, she'd more been paying attention to this whippersnapper than the glass itself. Another thing the kid did- made that seem quite appealing. So, Vola shimmied off her glove and gave the wall a long, thoughtful stroke.

The glass was cool, but not cold. It felt still liquid to the touch, but again, not cold. And when she thought on it, really and truly thought on it like the girl did with her eyes half-closed and her little self so very much at peace.

"You know? I do. It's /different/ from the glass in the place I just left. Better."

Summer blinked. "Your glass is different? How is it different? It's all glass, isn't it? Or is it like lightning glass? That happens when lightning hits the beach, you know. It looks very strange, all twisted and cloudy, but I think it's lovely."

Well, you really did learn something new every day. She would totally run lighting glass by her own PA just to make sure. But, for right then: Vola put both hands on the glass and groped, determined to answer the question.

Possibly, it took her a long time to answer.

"This glass fells much more /expensive/ than city glass. I mean, people don't put lead crystal in windows where I'm from, but I swear that's what this is."

"It is very pretty," Summer said. "Much prettier than windows at home. And it feels nicer too, all smooth. Is lead crystal made differently from normal glass?"

"It's got different stuff in it, from what I understand. And not all lead."

Heh. Vola was damn proud of herself, being able to answer that one. And speaking again of PAs, she was going to have to thank Duclos's.

"Like- regular glass is a vanilla cupcake, but lead crystal is chocolate, car glass is strawberry and boro that weird flavor your aunt makes that you can't place, but you like it."

Summer thought about that for a moment. "My aunt doesn't make cupcakes," she said, after a minute. "And neither does Aunt Melanie, but she's not really an aunt. I didn't think you could make cupcakes out of glass?"

"Er, well, I was trying to..." Vola began. But, then it snapped back to her. "They make all kinds of crazy sh-... stuff out of glass. Carousels, dragons, naked people. Cupcakes? Sure."

"Oh, like decorative cupcakes," Summer said. "All right. I understand that. Do you have glass things? I mean I know your place does but, I mean, you personally."

Vola couldn't help but grin as she nodded at that. "Indeed I do. My sisters and I built ourselves an office building that's more glass per square foot than any place in the city." Also, she meeped, just a little, because even ten years out, it was still just so... something she had craved to come true. "We wanted everybody to see how cool we were and now they do. How about you, missy? Bet you've got yourself a cute glass unicorn or two."
