Two lists, because neither of us could choose:
1. Ghost - Death of a sibling or friend, a la Thrall in Dunehelden but anyone relevant. Bonus: multiple characters, same scenario.
2. Creak - A character begins making a habit of sneaking out/around at night.
3. Night terror - A character has to spend time in a place that reminds them of something terrible.
4. Dark corner - A character dealing with their darker side. Bonus: character’s darker side is partly supernatural. Double Bonus: not Hitoshi or Veronique.
5. Under the bed - How do you comfort a child when the monsters are real?
6. Staring at the wall - A character is trapped alone in bad weather, or multiple characters are isolated from each other.
7. Creeping shadows - Hitoshi discovers magic. Hitomi goes through a goth phase. Bonus: nWoD, rest of the family isn’t also magic.
8. Monster - It’s one thing to do it because you have to. It’s another to start enjoying it.
9. Worry - Blaise is a free spirit, but the world knocks everyone down sometime. Bonus: college AU.
10. Leaky faucet - Moving into a new house together brings new challenges. Bonus: Hitoshi/Alex.
11. Nightmare - It feels like the same dream every night, but the character can’t remember how it ends.
12. Nyctophobia - Not all spaceships are sleek, new, and well-lit.
13. Snatched - Someone goes missing while Trick-or-Treating. Bonus: Hitomi and/or Rudeth as chaperone.
14. Robber - Things start going missing under increasingly mysterious circumstances.
15. Rattle - Spookiness break, write about kids and their favorite toys as they grow older.
16. Incubus/Succubus - Angel/Frog, fae or demon AU, either or both of them.
17. Ward - Someone needs to take in a child/younger person to protect them.
18. Insomnia - A character discovers a horror series (any media) and has a hard time putting it down. Bonus: an internet-based series or creepypasta.
19. Hiding under the covers - “What are you reading under there?” asked the strange voice.
20. Nightlight - Sometimes bad guys make the best good guys. Any Abyssal/Lunar pairing.
1. Cat/Mouse - Shapeshifting and its effect on mental state, muscle memory, sense of self, and/or related things.
2. Wine/Water - A character balances a double life, and finds they (need|want|like) both sides.
3. Friend/Enemy - They remember each other, but not the same “each other”. Amnesia/past lives/mindwipe. Bonus: Exalted or Sailor Senshi AU.
4. Rain/Sun - Fairy tales often involve long journeys. Tell a fairy tale with Rudeth where he’s /not/ the dashing prince-hero.
5. Silk/Cotton - “Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn” ― Orson Welles
6. Day/Night - Two people with very different schedules meet at dawn or dusk.
7. Garden/Road - Rhys and Blaise, house/apartment-shopping. Bonus: college AU.
8. Quiet/Noise - Hitoshi and Hitomi sharing a space. Bonus: college AU or SF.
9. Space/Confinement - Coping with life on an isolated space station or a cramped colony on a non-terraformed world.
10. Hand/Fist - A character learns to fight what needs to be fought and accept what needs to be accepted.
11. Running/Stumbling - A character finds themselves failing at their career or in their beliefs and has to confront the possibility of change.
12. Jewel/Stone - Beauty and strength both hold magic. Possibly literally.
13. Rush/Calm - Rudeth and Thrall, late senior year/first year of college.
14. Pen/Blade - In the midst of war, different people fight different kinds of battles. Bonus: period AU.
15. Feather/Lead - A group of friends grows together and apart; some get tied down, others learn to fly. Bonus: Jaymie+Crystal+Blaise.
16. Body/Being - A character struggles with not having magic/superpowers/cybernetics in a setting where others do.
17. Home/Far Off Place - Two characters from different settings switch places.
18. Sea/Desert - A character is forced to pick between two bad choices.
19. Gift/Stolen Object - Rewrite Gift of the Magi or Aladdin. Or both. Bonus: Angel/Frog.
20. Peace/War - A sticky political situation threatens to separate a parent(s) and their child(ren). Bonus: Rivienne and kid!R+T. Double Bonus: Starfleet AU.
