I hope this is okay to ask but I was wondering about how my fellow writers picked out their colors.

I currently just finished a color and now I'm thinking about picking a new one. It used to be easier when I was only writing one series, but since I've diversified a bit, I've been trying to pick out colors that could be made to fit the current situations in each series.

So I was wondering: do you have a method to how you pick out the colors you want to use for your stories or do you choose randomly and go from there?

Right now I'm working on the colors for a particular palette. But in general I think I just look for something where at least a couple of the prompts jump out at me.

A couple I have right now I picked because I'm working on a palette, but most of the time I just choose randomly. I have a master list of all the colors I haven't done yet in a spreadsheet, and when it's time to choose a new color I use a random number generator to give me a number between 1 and however many unused colors there are total. And I just go with the color the number corresponds to.

When I'm not grabbing for a palette, I have a list of all the colors that have had prompts that appeal to me--either specifically or 'hey, that might be cool to play with somehow'--and, when I'm ready to add a new color, I look for a prompt that fits what I want to write that night/what jumps out at me.

I've gone through the bulk of the color lists, picked out any that jumped out at me, and saved them in Evernote. I have four sections -- Maybe, Definitely, Active, and Finished. I currently have 18 definitelies and 35 maybes saved, which is FAR from the total list of colors available. I haven't actually finished a color yet, but when I do I'll shift through the definites and see which one I like the most.

For the record, the lounge is for pretty much anything writing and RF-related. This is exactly the kind of thing it's for. :)

As for picking colors, I go through them and see what jumps out at me. If I see a couple, I add it to a 'possibilities' list. I also try to pick a few that will challenge me (I tend toward proverbial colors, so it's good to get out of my comfort zone now and again). Then once I've gone through enough, I go over my possibilities list and keep narrowing it down from there. It's kind of an involved process, lol.
