Aaron still wasn't sure why he was here, trailing behind Joy as she alternately stared at a piece of paper in her hand and scanned the buildings to find their destination, but whatever, it wasn't as if he'd had anything better to do today. Probably why she'd dragged him along, actually, since he and Sean... he pushed away a pang of regret. That was over and done with, and this was a social call.

"Aha!" Joy said brightly, caught his arm, and led him across the street, into a small coffeeshop that wasn't, for a wonder, Starbucks. "Here we are, and there they are! James! Over here!"

Mort nodded. "Yeah, James is... impossible to embarrass, I think he said that?" He smirked. "But yeah, most people - just don't even know what to do with information like that. It's like, man, not wanting sex is weird enough, did you have to try it and not like it too? It's like..." He half-shrugged. "Like they think it's a personal attack on their preferences or something. Like if there's one person in the world who doesn't enjoy sex, the whole structure of civilization will crrrrumble." He delivered the last clause in a ridiculously over-melodramatic tone, waving one hand in the air like a B-movie villain.

"That was your girlfriend, Lorelai?" Mort guessed.

Mort nodded. "I can understand that. I actually didn't date again until James, and for the first... what, ten years I knew him, I didn't consider us dating." He chuckled. Well, except...

Fuck it. If he was going to have this conversation, why the hell not. "Well - didn't date, date," he said, pulling a wry face. "I let my Army buddies drag me along to a brothel one time over in the Gulf. Desert Storm," he added, nodding at his bad leg. "Figured I should give it a shot when I was, you know, ready for it. I don't think that counts as dating, exactly, but... God." He reached out to pat Aaron's hand, paused and waited for Aaron to nod first. "I suspect I know pretty much how you feel, Aaron. Not fun."

"Absolutely," Mort agreed, nodding firmly. "I mean, I know not even all aces feel that way--" He glanced fondly over at James, who was still over by the pastry case with Joy, both of them talking a mile a minute. "--but I sure do. So, uh, you and Joy are dating, then?" he added, referring to Aaron's comment about not dating 'until Joy'. "I couldn't figure out if you were or not. I'll have to tell James he was right, then. Again." He grinned. "One of the minor drawbacks of living with a Sherlock Holmes who's also... I'm sorry, that's an obscure in-joke, I'm babbling." No point assuming Aaron would get geeky references just because he looked like a nerd, that was rude. Mort chuckled dryly. "So - you and Joy, I'm gathering she's... uh, not ace, but you make it work anyway? I'm impressed."
