4th Walling is for fandom characters. For example if your character is Nightcrawler from Xmen and someone else reasonably could have read the comic books, are they allowed to go "OH YOU ARE NIGHTCRAWLER" and proceed to know details of your life/canon.
A more practical example is if you're playing a character from Fables, say Snow White. In her canon people know her fable so she knows who she is and people know details of her story even if they aren't all correct.
