Pip was pretty damn good at biting her tongue on the issue of Mother Morgan by then. That always made other people all gloomy, no matter how long ago it had happened. Usually though, they didn't care if she just had a dad. That was smiling and nodding material at least.

"Not really," she said. "But, my best friend at school. She dun havea mom ora dad anymore an she misses the ones she did have every day. So, I think I did pretty good, actually."
