1. A large income is the best recipe for happiness I ever heard of. - Lin is arrested at a protest only to be bailed out by a lawyer he’s never met who says that a relative he’s never heard of died, leaving him a vast fortune.
2. A mind lively and at ease, can do with seeing nothing, and can see nothing that does not answer. - Jess is recovering from an injury for which she is required to wear a bandage over both eyes. She cannot presently read the books she loves.
3. A person who can write a long letter with ease, cannot write ill. - Dmitry has to remain professional, despite having a powerful dislike for someone.
4. An artist cannot do anything slovenly. - Someone is trying to convince Bird that his room is messy.
5. Every man is surrounded by a neighborhood of voluntary spies. - Mike is worried about a housewarming dinner party to which he and his housemates have been invited.
6. For what do we live, but to make sport for our neighbors and laugh at them in our turn? - Hyeon has been sent across the street to borrow a cup of sugar.
7. Friendship is certainly the finest balm for the pangs of disappointed love. - Jess is able to turn to Mike, Hyeon, and Bird when one of her relationships dissolves.
8. From politics, it was an easy step to silence. - “That’s enough internet for today.” ~ Lin
9. General benevolence, but not general friendship, made a man what he ought to be. - Alex has reason to reflect on the kindness someone else has recently shown him.

14. I cannot speak well enough to be unintelligible. - Someone was letting their ignorance fuel their arrogance and Dmitry had about had enough.
15. I do not want people to be very agreeable, as it saves me the trouble of liking them a great deal. - Alex has just lost someone who might’ve been a friend, but really wasn’t.
16. If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more. - Thatch is having trouble with his feelings.
17. If things are going untowardly one month, they are sure to mend the next. - Lin had never seen such bullshit before.
